3 Things to Know from General Conference

A quick dive into "Facing Our Spiritual Hurricanes by Believing in Christ" by Elder Sean Douglas from the October 2021 General Conference.

1. Something cool from Elder Douglas

Elder Douglas shared the story of his granddaughter Ruby who has faced a number of medical struggles since birth.

One of those struggles was that she was born with a hand that wasn’t fully developed and required reconstructive surgery.

Before the surgery took place Elder Douglas and his wife gave her a drawing of a child’s hand holding the Savior’s hand.  This piece of art was actually made by my friend David Bowman.

It is called “One By One” and you can purchase it here.

2. Something you might have missed

Elder Douglas discussed how the formation of hurricanes is governed by physical laws: the ocean water MUST be at least 80 degrees for at least 165 feet below the ocean’s surface and there must be winds that cause the water to vaporize, clouds that form, and the wind must continue blowing to create a spiral pattern over the ocean.

Similarly, he said, our happiness is governed by a spiritual law.

What is that law?  It’s really quite simple.  Happiness comes from keeping the commandments.

3. Something you need to know from Elder Douglas

Three Things to Know: Elder Sean Douglas, General Conference talk, "Facing Our Spiritual Hurricanes by Believing in Christ".

Elder Douglas pointed out that belief is a choice.  But he also said that doubt is a choice.

When we choose doubt we create just the right circumstances for Satan’s attacks.

Which brings up a question– how can we have honest questions about the gospel without creating circumstances in which Satan can more easily attack us?
